Hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus, Cricetulus griseus, Cricetus cricetus, Phodopus sungorus)

Hamster Facts

Hamsters can live between 1.5-2 years, sexually mature as early as 5 weeks, gestation of 2-3 weeks and can have litters of up to 10 babies. Spay and neutering is possible and can help prevent some medical and behavioral problems. Hamsters are nocturnal but when socialized can be enjoyed during the day as well. Be cautious when first handling because hamsters can inflict a painful bite but with time and socialization make interesting and enjoyable pets.

Hamster Housing

Hamsters are know for there ability to escape so it is important to house hamsters in appropriate escape proof cages and to monitor for any places that have been worn down by gnawing. Any worn out spots need to be repaired or replaced. It is best to get a simple light weight enclosure that is easy to clean, remember the more elaborate the setup the more attention is needed to clean all the parts. The cage should also have partial or complete solid sides to contain the bedding and should be well ventilated. The bedding should be deep and can be recycled paper products, corncob by-products, or shavings from pine aspen or oak. Despite the fact that is smells good cedar shavings should never be used because of the potential of causing medical problems. Exercise wheels are a great source of enrichment to help keep your pet happy and healthy. If you use one of the plastic roam around balls always have parental supervision and watch out for hazards such as direct sunlight, stairs, and other pets or small children. Hamsters are extremely susceptible to over heating in hot humid environments and should be kept in a cool place in the house during the summer months. Untreated wood and paper towel rolls give something for them to gnaw on and a hide box is important to alleviate stress.

Hamster Grooming

Little grooming is necessary for hamsters if there cages are kept properly clean. If a long-haired hamster is owned it may require hair to be trimmed to prevent it from becoming matted or tangled in exercise wheels.

Hamster Health Care

Hamsters should be seen by there veterinarian at least twice yearly and anytime you suspect there is a health issue. Some recommendations that may be made are blood and urine analysis, fecal floats, dental work, radiographs and surgery to spay or neuter your pet.
