Vet Tip of the Month
Forage Technical Differences
· Alfalfa hay forage is often preferred forage because of its high quality, high digestibility and good roughage value. High quality alfalfa hay has high protein, energy, vitamins and minerals. It is also grown nationwide and it is more readily available as well as more cost effective.
· Timothy is the forage hay of choice, as animals can eat grass forages at will, with very limiting negative effects. Timothy, due to the balances of each cutting, creates constant nutritional values without any peaks and valleys within the dietary regimen.
· Orchard grass forage, rich and lush, can deliver maintenance to high levels of energy, depending on what cutting. Orchard grass for small animals usually will be 2nd or 3rd cutting, raising the bar on protein levels nearing that of alfalfa. Orchard grass is extremely palatable with higher levels of sugar, although still considered to be within allowable range for low non-structured carbohydrates.
